Instrument Information
Purchase
- If you would like to purchase an instrument, that is fantastic! There is great satisfaction in purchasing a new instrument for a student, and that student is more likely to take care of something that is their own, since they are held accountable for keeping it in good shape.
- BE CAREFUL when purchasing instruments ONLINE or USED. If it seems like too good of a deal, it probably is! Also, please don't buy anything that is hot pink...
- Here are some tips on purchasing instruments that are NOT FROM A MUSIC STORE: PLEASE READ THIS!!!! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VF4YyiJc__eTFnFK_8bHZhiuT9-an9Zg/view?usp=sharing
- Local music stores are incredibly helpful in guiding you in your first purchase of a used or new instrument. When talking to music store staff, mention that your student is in beginning, intermediate, or advanced band, since there are different models recommended for each level. Beginning at HBCS is 5th and 6th grade, intermediate is 7th and 8th grade, and advanced is High School, although it does depends on what year the student joined band.
- Our local stores are...
- ...Port Huron Music Center (Port Huron, MI): https://www.porthuronmusic.com/
- ...Quad N Music (Caro, MI): https://www.quadn.com/
- Another trusted website (not a physical store) is Woodwind & Brasswind: https://www.wwbw.com/
Rent
- We have an online portal at Port Huron Music Center, which makes it very easy for students to rent instruments.
- Here is the online rental portal: https://www.porthuronmusic.com/s-3-rentals.aspx
- Port Huron Music Center visits Harbor Beach Schools every Thursday morning, so students do NOT have to drive all the way to Port Huron! They will come to us!
- Our Instrument Rental Night is Monday, September 21st, at 6:00pm in the High School Library of HBCS. Please come for information, to start an instrument rental, or to purchase an instrument cleaning kit or book.

Borrow
- All students have access to a school instrument if they need one. However, there are limited amounts of each instrument in our inventory, and the student may not get their first or second choice.
- All students have the ability to request to check out cleaning materials. The expectation is that students will clean their instrument every time it is played, and it the responsibility of the student to have all of the materials with them.
Instrument Matching Tool
Students, please complete this "Instrument Matching Tool" online so we can safely and effectively fit you with a beginning band instrument that is right for you! It will take you about 15 minutes to complete. Please answer all of the questions as best as you can.
